Key features of the course

In Media Studies we cover a broad range of media products (adverts, film, TV, music, radio, computer games, magazines, newspapers and social & participatory media) and take a critical look at media industries.

The theoretical framework that underpins Media Studies consists of the 4 key concepts: Media Language, Representation, Audiences and Industries. Students build an understanding of the concepts and how they interrelate, as well as researching the social, cultural, historical and political contexts that influence and shape the media we all consume.

In Year 12, you will study for the Component 1 examination, developing key skills of analysis through extended written work and also in group discussions on issues from the legacy of slavery to feminist perspectives of music videos to the Post Modern concept of ‘hyper reality’. After the mock examination, you will complete the production element of the A-Level for coursework.

In Year 13, the focus will be on more in depth analysis of TV crime drama, YouTubers and online magazines. You will learn how to apply and evaluate key media theories and study how the mainstream media differs from independent alternatives.

Entry Requirements:

Minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 4, with at least a grade 5 in English Language.
