Baker Clause Policy Statement

Quarrydale Academy uses the Gatsby Benchmarks and the CDi Framework as a guide to plan our Careers and PSHE programmes. As part of our commitment to informing our students of the full range of learning and training pathways on offer to them, we are happy to consider requests from training, apprenticeship and vocational education providers to speak to students.

Quarrydale Academy also proactively seeks to build relationships with partners as we plan our Careers activities throughout the school year to ensure that providers have multiple opportunities to speak to students and their parents across years 7-11, to offer information on vocational, technical and apprenticeship qualifications and pathways. Quarrydale Academy ensures that Academy staff involved in personnel guidance and pastoral support are up to date on their knowledge of these post 16 and post 18 pathways, through a programme of Continuing Professional Development.

Opportunities for providers to speak with students may include school assemblies, employer and provider engagement events or opportunities to speak with students and parents on a one-to-one basis supporting GCSE and post 16 option choices. Quarrydale Academy’s Careers and PSHE programmes are monitored for quality and impact.

DEVELOPING YOURSELF THROUGH CAREERS, EMPLOYABILITY AND ENTERPRISE EDUCATION

Area of Learning

1. Self-Awareness

KS3   -  All year 7 pupils take part in tutor time activities which focuses on them thinking about themselves and looking at identifying personal attributes – ‘that’s like me’, ‘that’s not like me’.   All year 8 pupils take part in an Enterprising event looking at skills and qualities describing their strengths and preferences.  All year 9 pupils focus on decision making and option choices.

KS4 -  All year 10 pupils will visit work places and have employer engagement and recognise what is important to them.  All year 11 pupils have mock interviews, planning meetings to discuss jobs. 

KS5 – All year 12/13 pupils will write a personal statement either for university/college/apprenticeships.

2. Self –Determination

KS3 – Pupils reflect on what they are good at and interested in and recognise positive and negative experiences in PSHE lessons.

KS4 – Pupils do a CV to show how they are building on their strengths and interests.

KS5 -  Students reflect on their personal statements with help from an adult

3. Self-improvement as a learner

KS3 -  Pupils complete questionnaires and feedback to tutors.

KS4 -  Pupils have feedback from mock interview day.

KS5 -  Pupils take part in group activities and assess their contribution to work.  This is done with outside providers such as the Learn to Learn programme.

LEARNING ABOUT CAREERS AND THE WORLD OF WORK

4. Exploring careers and career development

KS3  - Different programmes, visitors in school, talks and discussions, options evening.  Visiting businesses and information centres for inspiration and aspiration such as The National Space Centre.

KS4 – Work place visits, visits to colleges and universities, mock interviews, impartial careers guidance

KS5 – Visits to HE colleges and universities, and businesses offering degree apprenticeships,  work experience, programmes with outside providers

5. Investigating work and working life

KS3/4/5    Visitors coming into school to talk about their career and career pathway.

Visiting local companies and talking to employers and their employees.

6. Understanding business and Industry

KS3/4/5     Going to visit different companies.   Subject lessons in school teach about businesses and industries.  

7. Investigating jobs and labour market information LMI

KS3/4/5  Pupils have information links on the school website.  Staff had training on LMI to inform pupils.

8. Valuing equality, diversity and inclusion

KS3/4/5 All pupils are taught PSHE and school has an anti-bullying co-ordinator, a LGBT co-ordinator, a safeguarding officer, and a SENCO to speak to pupils.

9. Learning about safe working practices and environments

Pupil’s are taught safety in schools and extra lessons on safety in the work place.  All employers are checked for health and safety and risk assessed.

DEVELOPING YOUR CAREER MANAGEMENT AND EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS

10. Making the most of careers information, advice and guidance

Pupil’s have a careers library in school and access to laptops – the careers leader is based in the library and gives one-to-one guidance on accessing information.  Pupils also have leaflets on how and where to access information.  They are sent information on the schools emailing system.  Pupil’s in year 11 and year 13 are also offered 1to1 impartial careers advice with an outside provider.

11. Preparing for employability

Pupil’s are prepared for employability by having mock interviews, work experience (in Year 12), outside providers delivering workshops such as CV writing.

12. Showing initiative and enterprise

Pupil’s have the opportunity to take part in Enterprise days, events and competitions throughout their time in school.

13. Developing personal financial capability

Pupil’s are taught finance and budgeting in Maths lessons.  We also have outside providers who deliver finance and budgeting to key stage 4 and 5 and it is also taught to pupils in their PSHE lessons.

14. Identifying choices and opportunities

See no.10.  Also pupil’s are given pathway choices in year 9,  year 11 and year 13.

15. Planning and deciding

Pupil’s are given the skills to help them plan and make decisions

16. Handling applications and interviews

Pupil’s have mock interviews, have training pre mock interviews, and are taught by outside providers and teachers on how to do applications.

17. Managing changes and transitions

Pupils are given lots of support on transitions, year 9 option choices, year 11 help with visits to college’s etc, year 12/13 help with transition to universities, etc.
